Tour Lake View Cemetery
Our 3rd stop on our 94 Days of Summer and Discovery Tour is to
Lake View Cemetery. Founded in 1869 by
wealthy Clevelanders including Jeptha Wade, was modeled after Boston's Mount
Auburn Cemetery as well as the historic cemeteries of France and England. The 285-acre scenic park is home to over 102,000 graves, with an average of 700
burials annually. Lake View is a memorial to those who built our community,
from titans of industry and civic leaders to immigrant laborers and
descendants of slaves.
Visit the graves of President James A. Garfield, John D
Rockefeller, Garrett Morgan, Francis Glidden, Carl Stokes, Ray Chapman, and
Elliott Ness to name a few. The Garfield Memorial includes rich, gold mosaics,
beautifully colored marble, stained glass windows, and deep-red granite columns.
The stained-glass windows and window-like panes represent the original 13
colonies, plus the state of Ohio, along with panels depicting War and Peace.
Standing in the main floor is a statue of the President sculpted by Alexander
Doyle.
Lake View Cemetery is also dedicated to safety they are is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and following protocols and
