Explore the Great Lakes Science Museum
Our 8th stop on our 94 Days of Summer and
Discovery Tour is to the Great Lakes Science Center where science, technology, engineering,
and math come alive. Home of the NASA Glenn Visitor Center and Cleveland Clinic
DOME Theater. The Science Center encourages guests to stay curious with
hundreds of hands-on exhibits, daily science demonstrations, and activities.
The museum reopened on June 19th with a limited
opening showcasing its “Body Worlds Rx" exhibit on the lower level of the
museum. A timed-ticket admission system has been set up. Tickets are available
for time slots 4-8 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Saturdays and Sundays. Exhibit tickets will also include an additional ticket
for general admission to the full museum at a later date.
The main floor and other parts of the museum will reopen on
Wednesday, July 1 with plenty of changes in place. For example, many of the
museum’s most interactive elements have been removed to increase space for
social distancing. For some interactive displays, touchpoints like buttons
have been replaced with sensors and footpads. For the building exhibits that
wouldn’t work without touching items, the museum has created a system to clean
heavily touched objects between uses. Once the entire center is open, visitors
will be urged to wash their hands multiple times. Informational placards will
explain not only proper hand-washing technique but the science behind it --
and also the science behind the coronavirus.
What the Museum Features when fully open:
- The Great Lakes Science Center permanent exhibits can teach you about Cleveland’s maritime history (the restored William G. Mather steamship), space exploration (the NASA Glenn Visitor Center), medicine (BioMedTech Gallery) and cool scientific concepts, like what 350,000 volts of static electricity does to your hair (Science Phenomena).
- In addition to the aforementioned permanent exhibits, the Science Center, whose motto is “stay curious,” also features an array of hands-on exhibits, traveling installations and a series of what it calls “out of the ordinary exhibits” that include introductions to nanotechnology, solar harnessing, and wind power.
- The Science Center also is home to the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater, the world’s first three-projector, laser-illuminated movie projection system, all shown on a screen that reaches six stories high. The theater shows both educational films and a double-feature series called “Take Two!” that screens well-known Hollywood movies.
